I recently had to restore from a hard disk crash and spent half a day putting e-mails back in folders. This is only a working solution if you use only a few folders or none at all. It is possible though to use the search function to select only those e-mail messages that are more recent than your last back-up and save them, but this process doesn’t store the folder structure that your messages were in. The Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client doesn’t provide a back-up tool. Although the general principles of this post still hold, specifics such as which plugins to use and what their menu paths are, may no longer be valid.
I have now tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, Thunderbird, and MozBackup multiple times, and running MozBackup multiple times, and the same thing happens each time.Notice 5 February 2020: search engines have been sending a fair amount of people this way recently. It has all the data from Firefox Synch, except that (as before the attempt at using MozBackup) all of my carefully curated folders of bookmarks from over a decade of use are gone (all the bookmarks appear to be there, but there is no organization or folders). Firefox has the tabs I opened on this machine before trying to restore the profile from my other machine. Thunderbird has no email profiles nor any saved emails, it is a perfectly clean new version asking me to set up a profile. I used MozBackup to backup my profiles on my old machine and restore them on this machine.Įxcept when I open Firefox or Thunderbird, nothing has been restored. I downloaded both Firefox and Thunderbird to my new machine. This time, I am moving from a Windows 7 machine (but with up-to-date Firefox and Thunderbird). I have used Firefox and Thunderbird for many years, and have always used MozBackup when I upgraded to a new computer.
